A trippy intro for Dub Daze, an imagined TV series about drug usage in the rave subcultures of 90s Britain. Soundtracked with Massive Attack’s Risingson.

Uncharted After Effects territory.
I entered this project with the goal of pushing myself far past my comfort zone. Before Dub Daze, I had barely scratched the surface of After Effects’ capabilities, mostly sticking to simple easy-ease motion on shape layers. Countless hours of tutorials have helped me add a host of new skills to my toolbox, from masking to the graph editor and beyond.

This project came with its fair share of frustrations. Heat map gradients are tricky, and as they are the foundation of this sequence, a good chunk of my time was spent tweaking keyframes, undoing, then tweaking again. I’m very happy with my outcome: as a champion of clean vectors I rarely work with fuzz and blur, so it was a nice exercise to play with a new visual style. Dub Daze has boosted my After Effects confidence to new heights, and I’m excited to apply my new skills to new projects!
